The Status of Women Veterans

Today, women are serving in the military in record numbers, representing more than 16% of active-duty military and 11% of veterans. While strides are being made to increase the representation of women in the military, the support services tailored to address the unique challenges faced by women veterans during their transition to civilian life still lag significantly behind.

When compared to their male counterparts, women veterans are more likely to fall into homelessness, live below the poverty threshold, experience higher unemployment rates, and be single parents. From 2020 to 2023, total veteran homelessness decreased by 4.5%, however homelessness among women Veterans increased by nearly 24%.

How We Help

Our mission is to serve women veterans and their children so that their next mission is clear and continues to impact the world. We are the only veteran organization in California solely focused on the economic wellbeing of women veterans, and we are the only in the country delivering critical childcare assistance for this community. We empower women veterans by providing the assistance and tools they need to prevent homelessness, achieve financial security, and attain the quality of life they fought for.

Our services holistically address the key obstacles women veterans face upon transitioning from the service and enhance their personal and economic wellbeing by:

  • Providing emergency financial stipends to cover rent, utilities, and basic needs assistance
  • Providing childcare assistance to veteran mothers who are returning to work, currently employed, or pursuing degrees
  • Helping women veterans set SMART goals, create a working budget, and locate affordable childcare/housing
  • Delivering financial literacy and professional development education, employment opportunities, internship, and professional mentorship opportunities
  • Distributing critical cost-reducing baby supplies and essential household goods through our warehouse in Vista, CA
  • Connecting women veterans to mental health, legal, and employment resources needed to maintain personal and fiscal stability

Be a Part of the Impact

Foundation for Women Warriors has impacted the lives of over 7,500 women and children, and in the last year alone, we served 2,095 women and children. Of those we served through our financial assistance program, 98% have remained in their homes for at least 12 months and 94% of childcare assistance clients maintained or advanced employment and of those in a degree, they were able to persist in the program or graduate.

We address the top four needs that women veterans have self-identified as crucial to the success of their transition: education, employment, housing, and childcare. Addressing these needs would not be possible without our amazing donors, volunteers, and supporters who are critical partners in our impact!

Thank you for supporting Foundation for Women Warriors and empowering our San Diego women veterans!
